9/22/2006 We heard UPS drive up but neither my wife not I were free at the moment to go to the door. When we did get to the door we were greeted with a bunch of boxes that prevented us from getting out.
So we opened the other door and it was blocked also.
It's not likely that anyone will be using the front door for a while.
We moved everything to the basement/workshop. Only the box labeled "Stage-1" has been opened.
After a small amount of searching I found what I was looking for in the Stage-1 box: Parts List; Owner's Manual; and Assembly Manual.
11 parts and 40 bolts later the frame is partially assembled and the leading truck is assembled.
The drivers and side rods are installed.
At the end of the day the timing linkage is installed.
And the timing is complete.
23 September 2006 - Day 2
Today I had help from Chris Wolcott, a friend we met through our Garden Railroad club.
This is only the second day of work on the locomotive and things are going more rapidly than I expected. ...
Chris watches as I install one of the rear leaf spring sets.
Reversing mechanism and pump are installed. As are the leaf springs and brake shoes.
Another view of one of the leaf springs with 10 individual leaves.
The side rods are back on.
Another view from the end of the water pump.
Assembling the drive cylinders and pistons.
Silicon sealer has been applied to the cylinder head and I'm wiping off any excess.
Carefully installing the cylinder head.
I'm installing one of the 12 tiny bolts that hold the cylinder head in place.
The cylinder and piston assemblies are nearly complete.
24 September 2006 - Day 3
I spent most of the day building a stand for the locomotive.
The whole stand with loco on it.
25 September 2006 - Day 4
One cylinder drain valve installed and one ready to be installed. Actually the valve is 3 parts soldered together.
Cylinder drain valves installed and connecting rod also installed.
11 bolts hold the cylinder to the frame.
Linkage connected.
30 September 2006 - Day 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Isn't that a beautiful looking boiler. Too bad it's going to get covered up.
Here I am studying the plans to figure out what to do next.
The boiler insulation and jacket have been installed.
The boiler, ash pan, and smoke box are installed on the frame.
Several hours were spent installing piping before concluding today's efforts with the installation of the running boards.
3 October 2006 - Day 10, 11
One of today's tasks was to install the sight glass. This is with the protective shielding still to be installed..
Here is the completed sight glass. A few pictures ago I said things were going quite rapidly because the parts were large. Here things are going more slowly. This is a good example. The sight glass assembly is only about 3 inches high and...
This is most of the 2 October accomplishments.
Smokebox door and stack installed.
Cladding and more piping installed.
More hardware installed in the cab area.
11 October 2006 - Day 12, 13, 14, 15
The last several days have involved finalizing the valve timing; building and installing the lamp, fire door, cab windows, cab, lubricator, whistle, the domes and their innards. This is the cab.
Lubricator.
Right side.
Left side.
12 October 2006 - Day 16, 17
Finished the engine and ran successfully under air pressure.
Started assembling tender trucks. Stopped to paint wheels.
Built rack to hold wheels and painted them.
14 October 2006 - Day 18
Finished assembling tender trucks and stopped to paint tender brake parts.
Another look at the tender trucks.
Drying the newly painted tender brake parts.
15 October 2006 - Day 19
Today the tender started coming together.
Partially assembled brake hardware.
A closer look at one of the components.
Most of the brake hardware in installed on this up-side-down truck.
Right-side-up with the bolster installed. I was impressed that the truck swivels on roller bearings.
Building the water tank and sealing all the joints.
While the sealant on the tank dries I did more assembly on the tender. It's beginning to look like something.
16 October 2006 - Day 20
The tender is really starting to look like a tender. The water tank passed the leak test and is installed along with the manual water pump.
Stainless Steel water tank cover is installed with 22 screws 2 mm in diameter and 4 mm long.
17 October 2006 - Day 21
The water tank and tender floor are all up-side-down so the tender plumbing can be installed.
It's ready to turn right-side-up.
18 October 2006 - Day 22
The Mogul and Tender are complete.
Finished view from the front quarter.
Next the critical test!... How well will it run?
